West Meon – Where everybody knows your name.
I love it when your expectations and prejudices are met by reality.
Met and surpassed.
I’ve had the privilege of spending a few days out on the british countryside together with some great people this weekend.
The day finally came when I got to see the homely township of West Meon – a place I’ve been hearing about since I first met my dear friend Liz some few years back. I’ve been hearing about how she grew up there, about the serenity of the place, how Thomas Lord, the local pub, is taken straight out of The Midsummer Murders. But without the murders.
And by God, it was.
It all ended up with me and Ivar hanging out with Neil McLeod and the rest of the locals, talking football (as you should in this country. constantly), downing the local ale by the pints and counting tweed jackets by the dozens. One or two mandatory meat pies also found it’s way, to add to the full experience.
As if it that wasn’t enough to constitute a good weekend, and roadtripping through an extraordinary “autumn-y” landscape with chirping (and well driving) company, I got the opportunity to talk New Zeeland sights and sounds with the subject of Fridays Bonfire Bon Voyage BBQ in Alton, Joss, since she’s moving there today. To all our despair, especially Liz’s, definitely.
Anyway, thanks for a great evening, Joss, Godspeed to “Down Under”, and hope to hear from you soon. And you never know though, it’s not more than a flight away..
All and all, it’s been a weekend full of great views, new people and British stereotypes. Now time for two days of city life, walks and of course: there’s the shopping with the Sterling they’re practically giving away nowadays.
But first, concert in Camden.
